How Much to Pay a Teenage Babysitter in 2026

If you're hiring a teenage babysitter, the first question is always the same: how much should you pay? It depends on where you live, how many kids you have, and what the teen brings to the table.

Average Teenage Babysitter Rates in 2026

Teenage babysitters (ages 14 to 17) typically charge $3 to $5 less per hour than adult sitters in the same area.[4] Here's what that looks like in practice:

  • National average: $14 to $18/hr for one child
  • Urban areas: $16 to $22/hr for one child
  • Rural areas: $10 to $15/hr for one child

These rates assume the teen has some babysitting experience. A teen with CPR certification, Red Cross training, or years of experience can reasonably charge closer to adult rates.

What Affects Teen Babysitter Pay

Experience and Certifications

A 16-year-old who's been babysitting since age 12 and has a Red Cross certificate is worth more than someone doing it for the first time. CPR and First Aid certs matter because they show the kid takes it seriously.[3]

Number of Children

Same rule as adult sitters: add $2 to $3 per hour for each additional child.[3] That said, be honest about whether a teenager can safely handle multiple young children, especially infants.

Time and Duration

Weekend evenings and holidays cost more. If you're asking a teen to babysit on New Year's Eve or prom night, you should expect to pay extra. Those are high-demand times for teenagers too.[5]

Duties Beyond Watching Kids

If you expect meal prep, homework help, or bedtime routines, that's worth an extra $1 to $2/hr. Driving should come with a bigger premium (and only if the teen has a license and your insurance covers them).

Should You Pay a Teen the Same as an Adult?

Not necessarily, but don't lowball them either. A teen who does a great job deserves fair pay. Pay closer to adult rates if the teen:

  • Has 2+ years of regular babysitting experience
  • Is CPR/First Aid certified
  • Consistently goes above and beyond (tidying up, doing activities with the kids)
  • Is the only sitter your kids actually like
